In the 1960s and 70s, there were huge areas of farmland in California where the laborers who worked there were mostly Mexican-Americans who lived in inhumane conditions and in extreme poverty. The Latino movement was primarily led by Cesar Chavez and he was completely dedicated towards upliftment of Mexican-Americans. This was his cause. Chavez had the idea of forming a union but the system was designed against Latinos in such a way that would make unionization impossible, with the Bracero program. This program was abolished in 1964. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi from India, Chavez and Huerta adopted a non-violent approach towards the formation of their union once the Bracero program was abolished.
